Mera Peak

Mera Peak

The main peak and attraction on Mahakulung-Mera visit is Mera Peak. You Can Start Your Trip From Phaplu through Mahakulung Area to have incredible experience of Local Kulung Culture and Mountain at a time. There is not only mountaineering but also trekking in this region.
Mera Peak lies in the eastern Solukhumbu, that's in Bung VDC, Ward No 9. And Mahakulung includes 5 VDC's of Solukhumbu including Bung, Chheskam, Sotang, Gudel and Pawai.
Mera Peak (6,654 m) is the highest permitted trekking peak of Nepal. It stands to the south of Everest and dominates the watershed between the heavily wooded valleys of the Hinku and Hongu Drangkas.
J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing made the first successful ascent of Mera Peak on 20 May 1953. The route they used is still the standard route. There are many other routes to the peak, but none of them are easy. Some of them require crossing very high and difficult passes. This leads to a true mountaineering experience. In the end, all efforts and hard work is paid off with spectacular scenery as Mera provides one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal.
Mera Peak offers a panoramic view of Chamlang, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, and Baruntse in the east and the peaks of Cho-Oyu, Ama Dablam and Kangtega to the west. Everest can be viewed to the north over the massive unclimbed south face of Lhotse and the Nuptse/Lhotse ridge. Under favourable conditions, it is possible to climb the peak and descend back on the same day.
There are now lodges at every place up to and including Khare, open during the main seasons from early March into late May, and late September to early December.
Mera Peak has three summits, the highest north summit at 6476m/21,247ft while the central summit at 6461m/21,198ft is the only one climbed. The south summit is minor. These names are generally accepted although debatable as the true summit is more accurately labeled the west summit, and the central summit better called the east summit.

Looking south from the Mera La towards the summit. The distant point between two humps isn't the central summit, but it is close to this. The true summit is accessed from near the central summit. The route is not visible here.

An often talked about obstacle is the last section to the central summit - here. This is steep enough that most people feel more comfortable with a 50m section of rope fixed. The central summit is by far the most commonly climbed summit. The west summit is marginally high and another half kilometre away, beyond most people at this stage.
From the summit no less than five of the world's 14 8000m mountains are visible. The panorama is superb, one of the best in the Himalaya. Even from high camp the view is fantastic, reward enough in case you don't make the summit.
